Food Tumors: An Investigation of Food's Relation to Certain Brain Tumor's
Food is the fuel which keeps the body running. The type of food that is eaten, can affect the functioning ability of the body rather it be energy, weight or even cause diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and even cancer. In fact, food has been found as a primary factor of tumors and other abnormal masses found within the digestive tract. It is because of this finding that scientists have taken to a whole new idea for these food tumors and that being is food and brain tumors linked as well? Multiple studies have concluded, yes food and brain tumors are in some way linked. In particular the NOC or N-nitroso compounds and it's precursors nitrate and nitrite, in food is the key to this linkage.
The studies focused on the adult diet and the diet of pregnant women to discover how the maternal diet affects tumor development in their children. The sample separated by age, gender and country and while different foods effected neoplastic development in adults and children, there was differently a link. In adults cured meats, diary, eggs and oil products were found to be increasing risk. However, in children it was non-cured meats that increased risk rather than cured meats. Also, grain, eggs, and citrus fruit increased risk as well. The primary conclusion made was that more studies were needed to better understand the association between food and brain tumors.
While there is an obvious connection, no study truly gave a hypothesis nor theory as to why there is a connection. My personal belief is that due to NOC being carcinogenic and being in the Nitrogen Oxide group which is associated to certain amino-acids, proteins and is a primary component in the neuroscience field. These three facts are the key to food tumor development. The foods that caused increased risk typically had high amounts of proteins and amino-acids such as meat and eggs. My theory is that when NOC, proteins and amino-acids mix a certain neurotransmitter such as glutamate which is also an amino-acid causes cells to uncontrollably grow and develop tumors. I also would like to see this investigated further because of the current food markets unhealthy effects on society, this would be another risk factor that the public should be aware of.
